You strap a smartwatch on your wrist expecting health insights and convenient notifications. What you're actually doing is volunteering to wear a surveillance device that monitors your heart rate, sleep patterns, location, stress levels, and movement habits—sometimes second by second, 24 hours a day. Most people have no idea what happens to that data once it leaves their wrist.

The Goldmine of Biometric Data

Apple Watch users have generated an estimated 100 billion health data points annually. Fitbit users contribute similar volumes. Samsung, Garmin, Oura, and dozens of smaller manufacturers are all collecting comparable streams of intimate biological information from millions of people worldwide.

Here's the uncomfortable part: this data is staggeringly valuable. A single heart rate variability reading can indicate stress levels, fitness improvements, and even emotional states. Sleep tracking data reveals circadian rhythms, potential sleep disorders, and baseline health conditions. GPS coordinates paired with timestamps create detailed movement patterns showing where you work, where you live, where you exercise, and even when you're away from home.

Insurance companies would pay handsomely for this information. Employers want to know who's healthy and productive. Advertisers are obsessed with behavioral patterns. Healthcare institutions could use it for research. The problem is that most smartwatch users haven't explicitly agreed to all the ways their data might be monetized.

The Terms of Service Nobody Reads

When you set up a smartwatch, you're asked to accept terms of service documents that often exceed 20,000 words. Most users click "agree" without reading a single page. Those documents typically contain permission grants so broad they'd make a lawyer wince.

Take Fitbit as an example. After Google's acquisition in 2021, the privacy policy expanded to explicitly allow Google to integrate Fitbit data with its other systems—including advertising profiles, Gmail data, and browsing history. Google now knows your exercise habits, sleep quality, and stress levels, and can correlate that information with everything you search for, every email you send, and every website you visit.

Apple is slightly more restrictive, marketing itself as privacy-conscious. Yet Apple Health data can still be shared with third-party apps you authorize—and once shared, Apple's privacy guarantees evaporate. Apps like MyFitnessPal, Strava, and Oura have their own data sharing agreements with brokers, research institutions, and yes, advertisers.

The fundamental issue is consent theater. Yes, technically users agreed to these terms. But "agreement" means nothing when the terms are incomprehensible to the average person and buried in legalese specifically designed to be confusing.

When Your Health Data Becomes a Liability

The consequences of biometric data exposure extend beyond targeted ads. Imagine a scenario where your insurance company discovers through your smartwatch data that you've been sedentary for months, gained weight, and sleep poorly—and uses that information to deny a claim or raise your premiums. This isn't hypothetical. Some insurers already offer discounts for connecting wearables and sharing data, which sounds good until you realize it's the same mechanism that enables discrimination.

There's also the employment angle. Some companies have required employees to wear fitness trackers as part of wellness programs. What happens when an employer sees that you're working late into the night (high stress levels, elevated heart rate) or taking frequent medical leave (irregular sleep patterns)? The data could be used against you, even if you've never explicitly told anyone about health conditions.

Data breaches add another layer of risk. In 2023, Oura Ring experienced a significant breach. Peloton leaked millions of users' data. Fitbit user information has been compromised multiple times. Unlike a password breach, you can't change your biometric data. Once your heart rate patterns, sleep cycles, and location history are exposed, that exposure is permanent.

The Murky World of Data Brokers

Even when manufacturers claim they don't sell user data directly, they often share it with data brokers and research institutions—sometimes anonymized, sometimes not. Aggregated and anonymized health data from millions of smartwatch users is sold to pharmaceutical companies researching diseases, to academic institutions running studies, and to health tech startups trying to develop new products.

The anonymization is often weaker than advertised. Researchers have demonstrated that combining smartwatch data with other publicly available information (like your social media profiles, purchase history, or public records) can re-identify supposedly anonymous users within reasonable certainty. You might think your data is anonymized when it's really just pseudonymized—still personally identifiable if someone bothers to cross-reference it properly.

Smartwatch manufacturers have little incentive to be transparent about these partnerships. The revenue from data sharing is often disclosed vaguely in SEC filings or buried in quarterly earnings reports. Users remain in the dark.

What You Can Actually Do

The realistic options are limited, but they exist. First, read your privacy policy. Actually read it, not just skim it. Look for sections on data sharing, third-party access, and retention policies. If you're uncomfortable with what you find, stop using the device.

Second, limit third-party app access. Most smartwatch platforms allow granular permissions. Don't authorize every app to access every data stream. If you use a fitness app, does it really need your sleep data? Probably not.

Third, opt out of data sharing programs wherever possible. Many manufacturers include opt-out options for research sharing and health studies. They're usually buried in settings menus, but they exist.

Fourth, understand that privacy and convenience exist in tension. The most privacy-respecting smartwatch options offer fewer integrations and less personalized feedback. Apple Watch is more restrictive than Fitbit. Garmin allows more data silo creation than Apple. There's no perfect option—only tradeoffs.

But understanding what you're trading away—understanding that you're essentially wearing a miniature surveillance device—changes how you should approach them. The question isn't whether smartwatches are worth wearing. It's whether you know exactly what you're paying with.
