Drive along the North Carolina coast, and you'll notice something haunting: forests of skeletal, leafless trees jutting from the water like wooden tombstones. These aren't remnants of some ancient disaster. They're happening right now, expanding each year, a phenomenon called "ghost forests" that coastal communities are only beginning to understand.
Ghost forests form when saltwater intrudes into freshwater swamps and marshes, poisoning the soil and preventing trees from absorbing nutrients. The trees don't fall over. Instead, they stand dead but upright, creating eerie monuments to environmental change. What makes this particularly unsettling is the speed. Where the Water Meets the Trees

A 2023 study from Duke University examined ghost forests across the Atlantic Coast and found that between 1990 and 2020, the phenomenon expanded significantly. The researchers estimated that salt intrusion had claimed forests at a rate that's only accelerating. Some areas that seemed stable a decade ago are now showing dramatic change.
The Hidden Ecosystem Collapse
Most people focus on the visual impact—and rightfully so. Standing among ghost forests is unsettling. But the real catastrophe unfolds beneath the surface. These dead trees once anchored entire ecosystems. Their root systems stabilized soil. Their canopies provided shade. Their fallen branches created habitat for fish, invertebrates, and countless microorganisms.

The soil, exposed to saltwater and erosion, transforms into something fundamentally different. What was once a productive forest becomes open water—sometimes mudflat, sometimes shallow bay. Indigenous communities and watermen who have worked these coasts for generations watched this unfold with growing alarm. Commercial fishermen noticed fish populations shifting. Hunters found their traditional routes flooded. Wildlife managers struggled to protect species that had nowhere left to go. What Makes Ghost Forests a Climate Wake-Up Call
Unlike many environmental problems that require sophisticated instruments to detect, ghost forests are visible from space. There's no room for debate about whether something is happening.
This visibility matters. When communities can literally see the problem from their homes, the urgency becomes impossible to ignore. The Conversation We're Not Having

But the reality is that some of this change is already locked in. Sea level will continue rising for decades regardless of what we do today. Some coastal areas will become uninhabitable. Some forests will die no matter what interventions we attempt.
Some researchers are exploring potential solutions—creating artificial oyster reefs to break wave energy, installing living shorelines, and planting salt-tolerant vegetation. These approaches can slow the problem but rarely stop it entirely. They're band-aids on a fundamental transformation.
Communities need to have hard conversations about which areas are worth fighting for and which areas we should strategically retreat from. It's not a comfortable discussion, and it requires resources and planning that most communities lack. But avoidance won't make the problem disappear. If anything, it makes the eventual disruption more severe.
The ghost forests remind us that climate change isn't something that happens in the Arctic or at some distant future date. It's happening in neighborhoods, affecting people's livelihoods right now. And unless we fundamentally transform how we approach this crisis—both through emissions reduction and honest conversations about adaptation—we can expect to see many more of these haunting forest graveyards sprouting along our coasts.
