What's Actually Being Done About This

Consumer pushback is slowly creating change. In 2023, Washington state proposed legislation requiring explicit consent before devices could record audio beyond wake-word detection. The Federal Trade Commission has begun investigating major tech companies' data practices more aggressively. Some researchers are developing browser extensions and hardware modifications that limit what smart devices can transmit.

A growing number of privacy-conscious users are switching to alternative systems. Some are building their own smart home setups using open-source software like Home Assistant, which doesn't transmit data to cloud servers. Others are simply choosing not to buy smart speakers at all—a decision that's becoming increasingly practical as the technology's novelty wears off.
