Our brains recognize when politeness becomes performative, and we don't like it.

Companies are starting to realize this politeness problem hits their bottom line. The reason? They're becoming more robot-like in their excessive courtesy, not less.

Amazon's customer service AI went through a recalibration in 2023. They found that when the system was trained to match the customer's communication style—if someone is being direct, be direct back; if someone is casual, match that tone—satisfaction scores jumped significantly. The AI learned to mirror context instead of applying a universal politeness algorithm.

Other companies are implementing a simple rule: admit uncertainty without apologizing for it. "I don't have access to real-time shipping data" is better than "I'm terribly sorry, but I'm afraid I don't have access to real-time shipping data." One is honest and direct. The other is performative.

What This Means Going Forward

As AI systems become more embedded in customer service, hospitality, and even healthcare, this politeness problem will only become more visible. We need to stop treating "excessive courtesy" as a proxy for safety or user-friendliness. It's actually the opposite.

The companies winning with AI right now are those treating it like a tool that should match human communication norms rather than exaggerate them. They're teaching their systems that being helpful means being clear, that being safe doesn't require apologizing for physical limitations, and that users can tell the difference between genuine and performed emotions.

Your AI chatbot doesn't need to be sorry for existing. It just needs to be useful. Turns out, that's what customers actually want all along.
