The crisis has gotten so severe that during the pandemic, some therapists started using AI themselves—using GPT-4 to generate initial responses to client emails so they could manage their overwhelming caseloads. Let that sink in. Human therapists were already being replaced by AI. Except the clients didn't know.
The Dangerous Comfort of the Algorithm
But here's where the story gets darker. AI mental health support has real limitations that people often don't understand. An AI chatbot cannot detect suicidal ideation with the subtlety a trained clinician can. It cannot prescribe medication. It cannot adjust treatment based on your biological response. It cannot handle complex trauma with the nuance required. It cannot sit with you in the hardest moments. But this would require a fundamental restructuring of how we fund and organize mental health care. It would require therapists to be paid more, given fewer clients, and given time for proper training. The Uncomfortable Truth
